were you wearing a long grey shirt with a white sleeveless top?
Some dancing! Best I've ever seen.
Thanks so much for enriching my life with your moves.
If not, thanks so much for your insightful review, what a show.
For me, the playback is better than the event. The buzzing of the crowd subsides and the music can be heard and felt.
See you at the Capitol Theatre for Phil's run.

Had a ton of fun watching the Q work their magic. Great show and good vibes all around. The highlight was hearing Phil take the band into the Eleven. Huge roar from the crowd. What a night!

first: great recording! pretty crisp, focused, layered with their collective sound, only sprinkles of the audience occasionally dashing the outskirts of the recording. balanced. present.
from the first notes of playin' you can feel their razor-focused intention and line-driving power reverberating throughout the audience. their presence, their synchronistic energy. it's bold, it's alive, it's fuckin' ready, and they spark that playin' with a space-y little twist! but it's the kind of space-y stuff even the "dude-that-space-y-shit's-weird" kinda heads can get into. brief, cohesive, tightly knit between two gorgeous jams. switching rhythms mid-'low spark' jam, the guys pave a smooth path into a slightly low-key but otherwise electric mason's.
then they gently lower the tail end of mason's and whip it into a 'rag! love me some good old pigpen-era staples! even though some of the guitar melodies here felt a little muddy and less punchy than the spunk-spiked 'rags of the 60's, it was a DAMN treat to hear! the energy flows softly-- nothing too crazy yet-- and then they smooth it out with a gorgeous rendition of 'a day in the life.' talk about pleasant surprises! i loved the pep they popped right in the second set of melodies before the chorus. fantastic. instrumental! and comfortably snuggled right in with its setlist neighbors.
and then-- we have miss viola lee. she starts off light, patient, almost purring, but ready to pounce (i'm pretty emotionally invested in this show, let's give it some character). she builds her force slowly, comfortably through the first sung verses, and then relaxes into some delicious jams. a hint of staccato, but not too sharp, building, experimenting, angled, layered. our viola lee relaxes just in the last minute, sailing smooth seas as she pipes into a palette-cleansing 1000 stars. a sweet, satiating, refreshing first set.
then set II happened.
the guys tune and tease seemingly aimlessly, then blossom into a breathtaking, serenading, stunning 'lady with a fan.' this is the point when i abandoned my spot next to the rail and wandered magnetically to a spare patch of floor space, kicked off my shoes, rolled up my floor-length skirt, and let my body fall into the bright, flowing melodies with some improvised classical ballet. breathing the music, letting the sleepy jams caress my spirit, trusting its soothing rhythms to guide my body, it flutters its eyes open! suddenly focused into quick, curt, precise beats. alive. ready. it awakens. and from the lady's pleasant slumber emerges none other than quite possibly one of my favorite (and one of my very first) pigpen-era classics. The. Motherfucking. Eleven.
a more patient tempo than typically graced this beauty of a composition back in its birth years, it consumed the stadium with purity, clarity, and joy. clean. respected. the history nestled in those notes. the tradition of late 60's dead sets. the energy of the good ol' grateful dead surely graced that stage last night. and i swear to god jerry was smiling down on us all. what love. what passion. the guys skillfully and carefully paced through that eleven to present us with a warm terrapin to complete the fresh, composed, gorgeous segue. it then exhaled into a gentle morning dew. a deep breath, a delicate touch, a sweet kiss of a morning dew.
a pause. take it all in. another exhale. ready?
and st stephen arrives! talk about ENERGY! the guys' power ricocheted off every molecule in that stadium. a faster-than-average tempo electrifying the air, it seamlessly complemented the slower tunes that preceded it. this is that part of the show, usually of set II, THAT part where the show's composition culminates in a series of heart-racing blasts, leaving me craving, craving, craving. more. again. please keep playing. it's the pick-me-up in the experience. the crest. and man, these guys brought the goods to the table last night. only to closely follow a delightful 'stephen with a tasteful modification of a classic segue: help>slip>franklin's!
evenly-paced, calm, and opening chords that are guaranteed stop any deadhead in their tracks, the segue began as usual. a nice 'help, whose closing chords would surely beget a 'slip, no? ah, yes, lovely-- a tail-end jam! but next some 'slip, no? nope? nope! not tonight. the guys virtuously morph some rather creative and intriguing 'help jams into an incredibly satisfying, power-packed 'other one. and when those signature riffs hit, damn did they shoot chills down my spine! the other one jams feel a little scattered at points, as if to open space for new layers to be added, to steer the jam to new grounds. and though relatively mellow, those jams certainly complement the release from a stellar st stephen. the jams dominate from this point, delicately weaving the slipknot throughout, picking it up at the last minute and kneading it into an evenly-paced franklin's tower. (and i could have sworn that somewhere in that segue there was a quick 'ya mar'...i was singing along...but i can't find it here.)
all in all, the set progresses seamlessly from one tune to the next. really, the guys masterfully and beautifully "curated" and executed both sets, each its own work in its own right. each giving us an experience unique to the moods the mosaic of segues and jams led us to feel. each song trickling, melting, breathing into the next gem.
it was an honor to be a part of this show. it was just what my soul needed, and they delivered. the energy, the power, it felt like jerry breathed some life force into those guys. phil, quintet, friends, thank you. THANK YOU!
audio recorder, thank you for capturing this sound, this experience, and sharing it with us.
